Welcome to Omasheet!
For quite a while now, I have had a hankering to write a new Spreadsheet Application. Sure, Microsoft(r) Excel(r) is ubiquitous and a standard. And Google Sheets, LibraOffice, Apple Numbers and so on have all joined in over the years.
But, as I have learned more about data science, specifically Apache Arrow and Polars; and as I have worked with GitHub markdown, commits and text diffs; and as I have learned about exact math support such as the Rust BigRational crate I have felt that the Spreadsheet needs a rethink for the modern era.
But - I was intimidated by the massive effort needed to write a new app from the ground up. And I felt unable to produce a quality application that would be able to stand its ground against the incumbents.
Getting to grips with Claude Code has changed all that! Now the cost to develop something of comparable quality is much lower. And improving all the time.
So, I made a wishlist of the things I wanted:
- easy
- text centric
- strong types
- exact maths
- arrow columnar data
- polars queries
- rust
(a partial list btw!)
And then, I heard about DHH’s Omarchy OS - an OS for the AI era without the “keep out” signs everywhere for AI developed code.
And I thought - perhaps the world is finally ready to step away from Excel and its derivatives, and Omarchy is an open field for new ideas and applications.
So here we are … starting the journey.
Please try it (click Getting Started). Feedback, collaboration and issues are welcome in the GH repo.
